Three days, one city and a list of twenty sights that absolutely have to be ticked off?
You can do that. But the best city breaks often happen precisely when you don't try to see as much as possible, but take the time to really experience a city.
Having a second coffee in the morning. Wandering through a neighbourhood with no destination. Ending up in a restaurant you never planned to visit. And realising on Sunday that you haven't seen nearly everything – yet still feeling that you have got to know the city a little.
Five ideas for a city break with more character and less checklist.
1. Choose the neighbourhood, not just the hotel
On a city break, the location of your hotel often decides how you experience a city.
Of course it is practical to stay as close as possible to the famous sights. But it can be more exciting to choose a neighbourhood where the city lives its everyday life.
Breakfast at the bakery next door. A stroll across a market. Sitting in a small café where nobody has a city map on the table. A drink in the bar around the corner in the evening.
That way the hotel is not just a starting point for sightseeing – your neighbourhood becomes a little home for a few days.
2. Ask people, not Google
Where is the best coffee? Which restaurant would you recommend to friends? And where do you go yourself on a Sunday morning?
Sometimes it is worth leaving your smartphone in your pocket for a moment and simply asking at reception.
People who live in a city often know exactly the places that never appear in any “top 10” article. The little Italian two streets away. The bar without a big neon sign. The most beautiful route for an evening walk.
And perhaps that very tip will later be the memory you associate with the city.
3. Plan just one main activity per day
A museum in the morning. An exhibition in the afternoon. Then shopping. Then a quick dash back to the hotel, a change of clothes and on time for the dinner reservation.
At the end of a day like that, you have seen a lot – but experienced surprisingly little.
Try it differently for once. Plan one activity you really want to do. A museum. A market. A special restaurant. A guided tour. And leave the rest of the day open.
Suddenly there is time for the little shop you happen to pass. For a coffee in the sun. Or simply for walking one more street because it looks interesting.
4. Experience the city at different times of day
Early in the morning, even a city you already know suddenly feels different.
The streets are still quiet, cafés are opening their doors and the first crates are being unpacked at the markets. While others are still at breakfast, the city almost belongs to you for a moment.
And in the evening? Don't keep looking at the clock. Order one more drink. Walk a little further through the city. Perhaps stop somewhere on the way back to the hotel.
It is especially pleasant when your suitcase doesn't have to be packed and standing by the door at 10 o'clock the next morning.
5. Make the last day a holiday too
Sunday, 11 a.m. Breakfast finished, suitcase packed, room vacated – and the train doesn't leave until 5 p.m.
That's why the last day of a city break often feels less like a holiday and more like a departure. Yet this very day could be especially lovely.
One more leisurely breakfast. A final walk around the neighbourhood. Back to the hotel to freshen up – and only then leave, relaxed.
That is exactly why little extras like a late check-out are among the benefits that suddenly become surprisingly valuable on a city break.
