About Styria

Styria is one of Austria’s most diverse regions, combining alpine mountains, historic cities, vineyards and a distinctive culinary culture. From the Dachstein and the mountains of Upper Styria to the rolling hills and vineyards of the south, the region offers remarkably varied landscapes.

In the north, dramatic mountains, clear lakes and vast natural areas define the scenery. Gesäuse National Park, the Schladming-Dachstein region and numerous hiking and skiing areas provide countless opportunities to experience the outdoors throughout the year. Hiking, mountaineering, cycling and winter sports are all part of the experience, alongside peaceful escapes surrounded by alpine nature.

Further south, the landscape changes considerably. Along the South Styrian Wine Road, vineyards, small villages and traditional wine taverns create an entirely different atmosphere. Local wines, Styrian pumpkin seed oil and a diverse culinary scene have made Styria one of Austria’s best-known regions for food and wine.

The regional capital Graz adds a vibrant urban dimension. Its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where Renaissance and Baroque architecture meet contemporary art, design, excellent cuisine and a lively modern atmosphere.

Styria is a destination of contrasts – from alpine peaks to vineyards, from nature and culture to outdoor adventures and culinary experiences. This diversity makes Austria’s “Green Heart” a region worth discovering at any time of year.
